Light Grounding
~ Magnetic Emotions ~
Beacons of Light: September 2010

From Steve:

This month the group gave us a very clear and strong signal that it was safe to move forward. The channel had a different energy, very direct and even a bit forceful. They said speak your mind in all things and let your voice be heard. It's time for each of us to let our vibration out into the universe. The example they showed me was not only complaining when something was wrong, but also speaking your mind when something is right. Have we ever thought to write a note at the bottom of the electric bill that reads, "Thanks for doing a great job this month!" My first thought was that no one important will ever see that note. But the group quickly reminded me that it was not even important that any read it, only that I write it. Basically, they said that all of our vibrations will be felt
more at this time.

They also mentioned an effect we will be feeling for years to come. In this channel they specifically spoke of forms of emotional instability that can be triggered by the magnetic fluxuations caused by the solar flares. They have mentioned this before in the Magnetics in Motion channel, but this time they gave us the figure of 76 hours after the flare. From the SpaceWeather.com site I can tell you that it does not take that long for the magnetic wave to hit Earth after a solar flare. However, I think they meant this as the time it takes to destabilize our internal systems and for us to feel the effects. It does not happen to everyone, but right now is a time on Earth when a new vibration is beginning and anything out of synch with that vibration is coming to the surface. More relationships are experiencing stretches than ever before for that reason. It is a time to get right with YOU and be heard!

Have a great month!

Greetings from Home.

Making Space for Empowered Humans

Dear ones, you have taken this day and altered every part of it. When this particular day was set into motion by the sun coming over the horizon, you had nothing but possibilities. You have altered everything that you have walked into in order to make space for your spirit to have a human experience. Now you are beginning to alter the entire universe to make space for empowered beings on planet Earth.

We have spoken of the tremendous respect and honor that not only we have for you, but also the way the other beings of the universe look upon you.  They see Earth as one of the highest possibilities to learn from and to emulate in many ways. Yes, you look at your daily newspaper and see wars, challenges, problems, tsunamis, earthquakes and more. But we tell you that it is your evolution and expansion into your proper place in the universe that is opening up the possibilities for you to change every single day. That is the beauty that now stands before you, and the possibilities that you did not have even yesterday. Every day possibilities are starting to build for you, and we are asking you to simply become aware. There is nothing you need to do other than to begin to use this information, and use the higher capabilities that you have been hiding from yourself for so long. Your constant work to contain your energy field has been needed to bring and hold in your energy, to define yourself as a human. Now you are starting to let go of that restriction and there are some of the possibilities starting to take place. You will now have capabilities that you never have before, so let us share with you an overview and what to expect and how you can work with it.

Field Theory

We have mentioned before that the year 2012 will reveal exposure to a type of radiation that you are already familiar with in many ways. However, you have never defined this radiation, for even your scientists are not completely comfortable in their understanding of what happens to a physical body inside of a magnetic field. What happens if you create a magnetic field around your body using very simple techniques? Actually, humans do this every time they have a thought. The energy of each thought merges with the energy of all the other thoughts you hold as truth. If the new thought successfully merges with your existing field, then the physical attraction process begins. This is the same way that you created your experience this morning when you first awoke and saw the sunlight as the first possibility of this day. When you have cosmic events that change the magnetics of your planet, every one of you feels that shift and does not quite know what to do with it. The upcoming exposure we are talking about may confuse or interrupt this process for some of you, especially those who seem to already have a natural sense of direction.

This exposure to magnetic radiation is taking place with what you call solar flares, CMEs (Coronal Mass Ejections). Your sun is beginning to erupt again; there is a new cycle it is starting to move through. Your scientists have known about this because it happens frequently-roughly every 12 years the sun goes through another cycle. Now the Earth is evolving and the Sun is helping Earth to change. What is taking place is that you are receiving magnetic radiation from the sun all the time, yet when you receive these big influxes from the solar flares there are many ways you can be affected. They change the ground that you walk on, so you suddenly start walking down the same path you have been on and now feel queasy, uncertain and like you do not quite belong. This is because the entire environment is beginning to change beneath your feet. Even though you are evolving, your physical and emotional bodies are having difficulty with this. We tell you this because you are the healers and the teachers of planet Earth. Although each of you will experience some of these things, you are also the ones who can help other people to walk through this. You have agreed to be here first so that you could open the door and hold it open for others to follow.

Magnetic Emotions

So, what is taking place exactly? This magnetic radiation will hit humans emotionally-very strongly. It already has occurred and now you are starting to feel it. You may feel as if you are being pushed to the edge,  emotionally raw and spiritually exhausted. Watch what happens to your emotions when a solar flare erupts and 76 hours later. We will simply give you the number: 76 hours after a solar flare. This time lapse has probably made you feel disconnected, but every human on planet Earth is likely to experience a roller coaster of emotions while this magnetic radiation is harmonizing.

There is nothing wrong, nothing you need to worry about or fix. Simply be aware. Pay attention to what is  taking place in your environment, for you are much more in control of it than you ever thought. It is when you are unaware of things that they catch you by surprise and quite often you cannot deal with them. Be conscious of the fact that as you walk outside and feel the sun, it is more than the heat, gamma rays, and x-rays that it  sends. It is a compilation of magnetic, light energy and your exposure to it over the next year and a half may have a direct impact on your emotions.

Now, the question is, what can you do about it? What are some tools to support you while walking through this changing environment? Even though the ground is shifting beneath your feet, you can stay on an even keel and get from Point A to Point B rather painlessly. This is something we mentioned before and wish to revisit today. It is called light grounding, which is simply a way for you to ground light energy in your physical body. It has been something each and every one of you have worked with and learned to do on a small automatic scale, much like the way you have never learned how to consciously breathe. We will teach you how to take this particular reaction out of the automatic realm and make it a conscious act, which will make it much easier for you to evolve past the upcoming changes. There is literally an energy field that each of you can create rather quickly a neutral field for you where you can catch your breath during these intense times.

Light Grounding

Envision that you have a filter around yourself that protects you from the magnetic shifting. It is here to affect the Earth and needs to. Although it will still affect you as you filter this energy through, this could be the first form of light grounding we will teach you. Keep in mind that what we call "light" is something different than what you do. You consider light to be a very small part of the electromagnetic spectrum; we call it the entire spectrum, plus a great deal that humans do not yet see. This is much bigger than what you consider light, because magnetism is a part of light and one of the pieces we have never learned to ground. There are many circuits, techniques, and devices that will protect you from magnetic fields and shield you from EMF radiation. Even though those approaches have worked well before, very few of them will be effective at this level because little of what you have on planet Earth will protect you from what we is coming. Rather than protect yourself, we ask you to learn to ground and use the energy. Adapt and harmonize rather than resist.

It is not that you need to run for protection either, because you are the masters of the Gameboard. You are the little gods pretending to be human. Because of that you can do it all with no problem, but we also want to tell you what is coming and share what the capabilities and why you set these in motion. So why is the Earth radiating? Why is it important to change the magnetics of Earth even further than what they originally thought would be necessary? It is because of you. You have evolved past what you had as the highest potential even five years ago.

Harmonics Are the Trigger

It is now possible to start working with harmonics. Harmonics are very simple. If you hit a note on a piano keyboard and look at the strings inside the piano, you will see that each one of those is vibrating. We have shared this with you before. Now you are learning how to straighten out the wave. You are learning how to fit harmonics to reach levels of vibration you have never been able to reach before and extend distances never thought possible. They were always just out of your reach. Now, through harmonics, you can reach and effect change in your own energy much easier than ever before. It is something you are unaccustomed to using. So even though it has been in your world for a long time you never knew you could control it, but you can control the amount of magnetism that reaches your physical body.

Similar to that you know the sun can do damage so you use sun block on your skin that only allows certain amounts of radiation from the sun through. The same will be true with the magnetic filters you place on yourself. Before we give you the xyz on exactly how to do it, play with it and find it yourself. Even if we give you a modality that shows you exactly how to do this, it will not be as effective as if you find it yourself. Listen to that inner voice; it will tell you how to harmonize and pull this through. That is the piece we are working with not only here in these rooms, but in every message we give you.

You have been walking on this planet pretending to be separate from each other, and that is about to end. It is starting to take place because as you begin to expand, there is no room for the separation anymore. It is magical. You start to understand your connection and harmonics with another person or a group of people. It is magical and simple, yet it is always going to take the people who do it first. It will always take the people who stand in front and dare to make the mistakes, as you call them, who dare to push, to try something new and work with it. This is the beginning of something we are calling "light grounding," and there will be much  more coming from it.;

Much of your experience here on this planet has been how to evolve and ascend. We are the first to tell you to stay here on Earth. Anchor that piece of you on the planet firmly, then you can expand without the problems because there will be all kinds of challenges if you begin expanding and moving into a large energy field without clear definition or without grounding. The grounding part is what allows you to pretend to be a human. That is what allows the beauty of Home to shine through your eyes when you smile, and to be seen in everything that you do. It is why you came to Earth. Welcome Home. Now you know that this is going to be a journey. Each and every one of you is going to find slightly different answers and when you start connecting the whole, you will get the bigger picture. It is the way humanity has always worked. Let us pull back for just a moment. We will work personally on light grounding with you and give you much more information as time goes forward. Let us speak of the emotional changes that will be occurring on planet Earth.

You have a disorder you labeled depression, which is liable to run rampant for a time on planet Earth. Magnetism is likely to set people into this emotion and when they get into a specific groove, whatever that is. That groove is very difficult to move out of, because depression is one of the energies that feeds upon itself and it is basically a lot of light grounding. Many of you have dealt with this for much of your lives; you often can call it clinical depression or causal depression. It is an energy that has existed here and is equated to what you call dark energy in the universe. It is not bad. Do not call it bad, for you place yourself in duality the moment you do that. Instead, take what you have and learn to use it. There are ways of being able to use it, and you can protect yourself from the cause of it.

Watch the sun, paying special attention to the 76-hour mark after the explosion although the actual magnetic waves will start coming in before that. You will be able to see the Aurora Borealis in unlikely places such as Arkansas and Texas, or in different places in the universe that have never experience these anomalies. It is also happening in your body as your body starts to adjust and change. The easiest way to cope is to reach out and hold somebody's hand, because every one of you is going through this together. Yet, when you go through it, the first thing you do is pull back your hand and think that this is all about you. That is part of the natural contraction of an energy field during these times. We tell you, dear ones, that you have a choice as do the clients that each of you is going to work with. There are techniques that will make all of this a bit easier as you move forward.

Physical Changes

Humanity is changing. It seems you do not even fit in your physical bodies any more. Your bodies are  beginning to evolve to make space for the new and empowered human, but so are a lot of things including  many of the social and economic structures you have on your planet. Here is the challenge. You have typically  defined success as being able to repeat something over and over again. So, you become very  comfortable in your little ruts. To be human is to typically find your own rut, because that is where your  comfort or safety zone is. However, that is now changing. Many of you will start moving beyond your comfort  zones yet not knowing where you are going, for that is the beauty of this expansion. Everyone is  beginning to expand because you were holding your energy fields in all that time. Now you are returning to an  expansive field that is more native to your soul. The social and economic structures will attempt to try to the  old ways and may even cause more difficulties before finally adapting. The problem is that some of them think  they are in charge and can determine your future.

Change the Structure

Even if you have an economic re-set like you have recently, the economic and social structures are going to  go back to playing the game exactly the way they did before, for they consider it successful because it worked before. So, they are going back to these structures until they hear from you that it will no longer  work. If you are depressed or wondering who you are, we ask you to become comfortable with your truth for now is the time to start speaking your truth and stop holding back.

If you have ever wondered who you  truly were or if one person could make a difference, now is the time to act. It is the time for each one of you to outgrow the ruts that your societies, economic structures, schools and other institutions have been stuck in. Now is the time to change, because that is what will help your children,  the next generation, to move into this energy that was so difficult for you to evolve into. It is time to get angry  and fed up with yourself and your environments, and to create the new structures that support empowered  humans. The world has been toying with this whole idea of war for so long, so why has it been so difficult to  get rid of war? War became a wonderful business, a rut that has been successful for a very long time. Now  we are going to ask you to wage war on yourselves instead. Kill with love. Share with kindness and do  everything you can to go in the opposite direction, but let your voice be heard. It is time.

You are not going to represent all of humanity, but you can certainly represent yourself. What does and does  not work for you? It is time to start grounding your needs, wants and desires, because the moment you do that--even though you may not make a difference over here--you have clearly defined your world and started  building a new energy and magnetic structure around those thoughts. That is light grounding. We tell you, dear  ones; it is time for you to speak out about what you are feeling. Every time you connect with that  energy, you are creating heaven here on earth. It is time for a new kind of war, it is time we kill each other with kindness and love. You can begin that today.

Dear ones, there are so many changes happening so quickly. We wish we could give you the answers so that  you could be in the right place at the right time. We know that many of you have intentionally set yourselves out of sync so that you could do something very important, and all of you are going to have that chance. So,  no matter where you find yourself now and over the next few years, know that you are being guided. Know  that if you listen, you will receive that information directly through your own heart. Ground that light into the  most beautiful energy on Planet Earth, for it will anchor you in all the days to come. Together you can hold hands and walk into this next evolution.

It is with the greatest of honor that we greet you this day we ask you simply to treat each other with the  greatest of respect. Nurture one another every chance you get and play well together.

Espavo.

Dreams Do Come True

Steve and I just returned from celebrating our 38th our wedding anniversary. We realized that we were together for two years before we got married so this was actually our 40th anniversary of living together. Each year has been a learning, loving experience.

I will tell you that a long marriage takes a lot of work. And it is worth it! Every day needs to be a fresh intent, valuing that new day with each other and of renewing the future together. This is what Steve and I enjoyed doing in our recent trip to Disneyland. I have often said that it is a dream of mine to rent out Disneyland for a huge private party where all Lightworkers come together to celebrate spiritual family. That still is a fantasy of mine but this time it was just a playful celebration for the two of us. We did think of all of you!

Steve and I got married in Big Bear, California on 09/09/72. Interesting that our last event on 09/09/09 was  held in the same place where we made that commitment. It all came together so perfectly that we knew it was meant to be. As much as we treasured the reconnection of being in the area where we married, we were  presenting a seminar around it. For many years we have been doing events around our anniversary. Although  the anniversaries have been special, I wanted one that was just about us and not having it be around a  seminar. He agreed. This is how we came about celebrating in Disneyland.

When we first got married we spent a couple of days in the mountains of Big Bear. After that we decided to  spend the next couple of days in Disneyland. I had never been there so I was excited as a child. It was a  fantastic way to start out our marriage enjoying the joyful surroundings. We took that feeling of fun and have  continued it throughout our time together in our relationship.

I enjoyed making all the plans for this vacation. I made arrangements for a very nice hotel next to the park.  We were greeted by employees who truly seemed happy to be working at this fun place. Right away the staff was saying happy anniversary to us. It was like a warm homecoming. When we got to our room the person   who was showing us around gave us a package with tickets, little souvenirs and two big buttons that we could  wear during our stay there. The tradition is when you wear any special badge everyone in Disneyland  congratulates you on whatever the occasion. The only problem was instead of "Happy Anniversary" it said  "Just Married."

The girl helping us was so apologetic that she hadn't gotten us the right buttons. I smiled and said that these  were just perfect. The whole four days I felt like a newlywed. I could not resist wearing my white sequin Minnie Mouse Ears with the wedding veil that Steve bought me. He of course wore his hat. I was looking  everywhere for Mickey Mouse ears to attach to it.People were always saying congratulation on your  wedding. Young girls almost had tears in their eyes to see that love can work out at any age. I really felt like  we gave them hope for their own relationships.

At the end of our visit one of the staff members gave us Happy Anniversary buttons. We wore them the last  day of our stay instead of the newlywed buttons. In a way the energy changed but still people created us  warmly. We were in the hotel elevator returning to our room after a long day of fun. There was another couple next to us who were also wearing a Happy Anniversary button. We of course started up a conversation with them. Turns out they were celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. Two young girls also  in the elevator were almost in disbelief that people could be together so long and still have so much love for  each other.

Disneyland is the land where dreams do come true. Whether you are in a long or short relationship or have  not yet found that special person to be with, enjoy the love you have for yourself. Celebrate love in your life in your own magical way.

With Love and Light

Barbara

Salsa Dancing Offers Physical and Mental Benefits to Partners
By Richard Methia

Salsa dancing can be a hot, sweaty way to spend a fun evening. It might even get a person a spot on television’s popular “So You Think You Can Dance?” competition. Apart from its sheer enjoyment salsa dance moves can relieve stress, sharpen mental acuity, and, thanks to new findings, perhaps even delay dementia and stave off breast cancer among older women.

Study Shows Promise for Salsa Dancing in Delaying Onset of Dementia

In a March 24, 2008, article, “Over-50s Are Shown How to Stay Limber;" (Northumberland, England Evening Chronicle) Jane Picken, the newspaper’s health reporter, interviewed over fifty people who took dancing lessons. One of Picken’s interviewees, a retired telecom manager, offered this testimonial about his salsa class, "Salsa dancing certainly helps with co-ordination, balance and even concentration so it's good for the mind."

The Northumberland telecom manager’s personal testimonial is buttressed by some promising research. OnlineSalsa.com reports that a New England Journal of Medicine study “found dancing potentially reduces the risk of elderly persons getting dementia such as Alzheimer’s disease.” The study’s lead researcher, Dr. Joseph Verghese, Albert Einstein College of Medecine, explains in the article that learning complex moves, which is required to learn to salsa dance, increases mental activity both because of the additional blood flow from the physical exertion and the need to recall complicated dance steps. Verghese also noted the beneficial social and stress relieving attributes of dances that are enjoyable and require physical closeness to partners, such as salsa.

U.S. Study Suggests Salsa Dancing May Prevent Breast Cancer in Older Women

An October 31, 2008, article in Britain’s The Daily Mail, reported that to dance salsa may also reduce the incidences of breast cancer. In “Vigorous Exercise Cuts Breast Cancer Risk in Over-60s'; Take a Twirl: Fast Dancing Counts as Vigorous,” Fiona MacRae wrote, “Getting stuck into the housework or doing salsa dancing late in life could significantly cut a woman's risk of breast cancer, research shows.” MacRae explained that for eleven years U.S. government researchers tracked over 32,000 women, whose average age was 61, and found that “Women who regularly carry out strenuous exercise in their 60s are 30 per cent less likely to develop the disease.”

Salsa Lessons Prod Creativity in Scientific Research

Salsa dancing is now thought to ease blood pressure, increase stamina, potentially stave off dementia and hopefully reduce breast cancer in older women. But salsa steps as a way to improve scientific research? Social scientist Kristin Luker would say, “Absolutely!” In her provocative book, Salsa Dancing into the Social Sciences: Research in an Age of Info-Glut,” (Harvard University Press; Cambridge, 2008) Luker makes a case for learning how to salsa as a powerful, if decidedly un-traditional, method for social scientists who need to restart their stalled intellectual engines.

“I’ve come to believe,” says Luker in the book’s introduction, “that salsa dancing (or any other enterprise that makes you hot and sweaty and takes your mind off your work) is absolutely essential to successful research.” She explains that the “seductive rhythms” of salsa subvert the logical brain and allow the researcher’s intuitive sense to well up.

In Salsa Dancing into the Social Sciences Luker re-packages what is known about the benefit of interaction between right and left brains. In doctoral-level language Luker explains that salsa dancing “aims to hit that sweet spot between the rigor and theory-building capacities of canonical quantitative social science research, and the emergent, open-ended, and pragmatic capabilities of traditional field research.” The rest of the book, burdened with similar jargon, is a slog for the lay reader, but it is refreshing to know that on occasion even Ph.D. researchers have salsa in their soul.

Kristin Luker’s professional insights into the intellectual benefits of salsa dancing are just the latest of many surprising suggestions that salsa is good for much more than simply having a good time on the dance floor.

Energy Share for Sunday
September 26, 2010

Go To Sleep

Go to sleep little one
Close your eyes
And dream a thousand dreams
Full of flowers and stars
And teddys
And doggies
And kitties
And fishies

Go to sleep little one
Close your eyes
And dream a thousand dreams
Dream of planes
Of boats
Of beep-beep cars
And choo-choo trains

Go to sleep little one
Close your eyes
And hold on tight!

Naturally, this affects me as a practitioner with the S.P.A. but I am optimistic about the new location which is a beautiful area with its own gardens, tai chi/qigong and Reiki there. Plus putting in extra time doing some editing on a soon to be published book, The Universal Happiness Method, promoting my Avon business, while continuing with holistic healing.

S.P.A. (Salus Per Aquam) Move to a New Location

In light of recent events, we at Salus Per Aquam would like to announce our upcoming move to a new location. For those who don’t know, a cell phone tower has been constructed in our building over the sushi restaurant and it has been wreaking havoc with our business. Many people understand the health risks with the radiation that it emits, and it is interfering with our energy healing work, affecting our practitioners and impeding our future business.

Karen is going to be in Arizona for 2 months helping out her mom with her cancer surgery. Therefore, there is not enough time to relocate the spa right now. As soon as Karen gets back she will inform everybody that she’s up and running. Most likely it will be at Common Ground Spiritual Church (www.commongroundcorona.com) on 510 West Foothill Parkway in Corona and our practitioners will be available for appointments there. We apologize for the inconvenience of any interruption that may affect your wellbeing and in receiving healing support from us.

Understand that is a move away from the destructive forces that we now find ourselves in to a place with wonderful energy and healing properties.

You can continue to contact Karen on her cell phone while she is in Arizona at 951-318-7633 as well as to order product from Lynn via our business number at 951-273-0801. You can leave messages at either number; Karen will continue to receive them.

We are deeply grateful for all your continued support and we are dedicated to continue operations of the S.P.A. to serve all the health and wellness needs of the community.

With Love and Light,

I love this message post! I got my bachelor's in dance theatre at the University of Hawaii years ago and also performed with a Hawaiian dance school in Virginia (some of my hula sisters also performed with a belly dancing troupe). And I felt I could easily relate to the words, especially now being disabled in a wheelchair and my continuing commitment to self-discovery and the creative process.

Have a wonderful day!

Lydia

There is no word for Goodbye
We just say 'ma uriul' (Palauan) or 'a hui hou aku no' (Hawaiian)
That means 'until we meet again'
We never leave each other
When does your mouth say goodbye to your heart?

Day 89- Ecstatic Dance for Pleasure

I love to dance. When I have been down in the dumps, when I have been heart broken, when I have been high on love, when I need to go within- I dance. Ecstatic Dance has been incredibly healing for me and the dance community in Los Angeles has been a sanctuary. Dancing in this way is a form of prayer for me. I used to dance at least 2 times a week, sometimes 5. Since having my son (1 year and 5 months ago) I have been to dance a total of maybe 5 times.

Today is my partner’s birthday and his wish was to go to dance with me. We met on the dance floor, our bodies falling into each other, me surrendering completely and life has never been the same since. Today, I wanted the dance to be about pleasure. How could I move my body for the most pleasure? The music was already playing when we arrived. I started with stretching and massaging my body deeply. My partner approached me for a dance. Our bodies are now familiar to each other and we can fall in easily, but today I was struggling. It’s this struggle between my old life, when I wasn’t a mom, when i lived so freely. His body on mine did bring me back into the moment. I love contact dancing. It’s like a body to body massage. It feels amazing. I got back to being with myself. it was about an hour into the dance when they played this great tribal song that brought my body into a familiar movement. My hips wiggles, my wrists twirled, I spun in happiness.

That was what I remembered, I used to Belly Dance, I even led a Drum and Dance troupe for awhile. I made a note to myself to find some Belly Dance classes. That would bring me pleasure. Unfortunately, that was the height of my ecstasy and I would come down with a big crash. It was like the dance just reminded me of what I was missing, or the life I no longer lead. It is time to get back to myself, but I left feeling unclear of what that is? I guess it all comes down to what it is that I really want out of life. I am a pleasure seeker, but I also seek stillness, meditation, going in. I invite myself into a deeper commitment of personal practice, a commitment to self-care, self-love and self-discovery.

I'm sure the day my doctor decided to visit the monastery he hadn't the slightest thought that the prior would throw him into the swimming pool. He stood with his nobility firmly in place at the beginning of the party, but when his wife was nudged into the water by a clumsy brother passing by, he may have begun to change his mind about what a monastery was.

Superficial solemnity, thankfully, was never part of my experience of the life. I have always favored the kind of spiritual involvement that begets rather than kills earthy humor and even ribaldry. The perspective of divinity can be defined as all that is contrary to human intention and dignified expectation.

We know we are moving more deeply into the spirit when we notice the presence in us of holy foolishness. And who is to say that this was not a case of baptismal renewal!

Integrated Dance

Staff Reporter
08/20/2010
Integrated dancing has become more popular in Seattle and other cities. It allows people with disabilities to express themselves by dancing with able–bodied people. But those involved in that style of dancing want to promote it with more access to instruction and performance. KUOW's Joy Ma tells us the story of Charlene Curtiss. She's an integrated dancer in Seattle who teaches and performs.

TRANSCRIPT
In a dance studio at the University of Washington, 15 people are gathered in a circle. Five of them are in wheelchairs. Charlene Curtiss is leading them in a dance workshop. She's moving her wheelchair to the rhythm of clapping. The other people in the studio, both those who are in wheelchairs and those who are not, begin dancing together.
Curtiss: "We try to insist that everybody participate in the workshop even if only in a small way. But some people would be adamant, 'no I'm just gonna watch,' but before we were done, they were dancing, and thrilled and marveled at how could they ever thought that they couldn't do that?"
Curtiss was injured in a gymnastics accident when she was 17. She's been in her wheelchair ever since. Years later, an experience overseas inspired her to dance.
Curtiss: "It was an interesting moment, it was an extraordinary moment. I was in Brazil, I was at the top of a mountain listening to musicians that I had met, and I found as I listen to the music that I found it coming into my arms, and I rediscovered movement in my upper body just by improvisationally moving to the music in this extraordinarily beautiful place."
In 1992 Curtiss founded a dance company called Light Motion to perform and to teach. Her goal is to promote integrated dance. She encourages people with and without handicaps to dance together.
The dancers move slowly on the dance floor, then they lean against each other. One dancer turns her wheelchair in circles. When she stops, her partner holds the arms of the wheelchair. He puts his head down and lifts his legs until he's completely upside down.
Curtiss is seeing more people participate in integrated dancing. One of the difficulties disabled dancers face, she says, is access to training.
Curtiss: "Dance studios are famously not accessible, and many dance instructors have very little experience or even exposure to integrated work. There are some places, even though they're wheelchair accessible, you have to educate them that it's okay for a wheelchair to be on your dance floor, it won't leave marks, it won't ruin your dance floor because someone with a disability wheeling around on it."
Another concern is about the dancers' injuries. Mark Tomasic is a researcher at the University of California, Irvine. He's studying health issues related to integrated dance. He says there's a lack of research in dancers' movement.
Tomasic: "But if we have the research to start with, we can say if you are dancing this way we found through biomechanical analysis and physiological testing, we found that if you do a turn this certain way you might be less likely to get injured, so the practicality comes in, in the training aspect of it and to keep people safe while they're dancing."
Tomasic is an able–bodied dancer himself. He says integrated dance is more than just dancing in wheelchairs — it's for people with mixed abilities.
Tomasic: "The world of physically integrated dance is inclusive to people with any kind of disability. So I actually prefer the word inclusive, because we are including everybody: different kind of disabilities, people who are able bodied. It is not leaving anybody out, so that is where the art form is going, it just continues to expand people's perceptions of what is capable and what is possible."
Near the end of the workshop, Charlene Curtiss joins her dance partner in the middle of the floor. They hook arms, then slide back, holding hands with their arms extended. Curtiss whirls slowly and gracefully around her partner.
Curtiss: "I think becoming disabled added to my life rather detracted. I may not have explored dance. My life could have been completely different, and I think the life that I've had has been very rewarding. Dance is giving me an incredible sense of freedom."
Ma: "Free from what?"
Curtiss: "From being grounded on the planet."

The three women are in a whirl, dealing with jobs, children and the daily rush of life. Suddenly a voice cuts through the air. “Is there someone there with you? I think you had better sit down. Your test results were positive. You have breast cancer.” The women stop, stunned.

Collaborative Dance Event

That is the opening of an interpretative dance piece by Laura Johnston, Kathy Gee and Catherine Bauer that will be a portion of an upcoming concert, “Dancing in Pink!” planned for Sept. 18 at 2 and 8 p.m. at the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre at the Warner Theatre in Torrington. Tickets are $27, and $3 from every ticket sale will go toward Are You Dense, Inc., the Woodbury-based breast cancer advocacy group, and Breast Cancer Action.

Are You Dense, founded by Woodbury resident Nancy M. Cappello, Ph.D., is dedicated to informing the public about dense breast tissue and its significance in the early detection of breast cancer, while Breast Cancer Action, based in San Francisco, Calif., carries the voices of people affected by breast cancer to inspire and compel the changes necessary to end the breast cancer epidemic.

“Dancing in Pink!” is a collaborative dance concert focused on the many perspectives of women’s experiences living with breast cancer. Judith Ehrman-Shapiro, a dancer and choreographer from Litchfield, is working with Ms. Johnston, Ms. Gee and Ms. Bauer, all breast cancer survivors, to create an original piece from their point of view. Joan Kunsch, associate director of The Nutmeg Conservatory for the Arts, will premiere an original dance drama featuring Nutmeg faculty member Victoria Mazzarelli, also a survivor, who will appear with her longtime dance partner Tim Melady.

Kellie Ann Lynch, a member of Adele Myers and Dancers and co-founder of the Elm City Dance Collective, will also debut a new solo piece, and Anthony Manuel, a Los Angeles choreographer and current artistic director for the Island Inspiration All-Stars performance company, will exhibit an original work of choreography featuring himself and Brattleboro, Vt., resident Emily Wolfman. Ms. Wolfman is also a member of the Kiva Dance Collective.

Performers include other members of the Kiva Dance Collective, the Clark Dance Theatre and Dance Connect.

The program was first conceived by Lacey Byrne, artistic director of Salix Productions in New Hartford. She said the inspiration came in 2009 when she was teaching a course on women and health at the University of Connecticut campus in Torrington. “We were doing a section on breast cancer,” she recalled, “and were reading ‘The Breast Cancer Diaries’ by Ann Murray Paige, a journalist from Portland, Maine. We got to the part about making a breast cast before a mastectomy, and I thought, ‘I think I see a dance movement here.’ The more I thought about it, the more ideas I had, until I had 15 or 20 [concepts]—personal and political … . I started talking to people and things just sort of fell into place.”

What evolved is a dance concert of some 11 pieces, of which “Courageous Journey, Finding the Pink Lining,” created by the three cancer survivors and facilitated by Ms. Ehrman-Shapiro, is perhaps the most intensely personal. “Everything from the sound score to their costumes they imagined and created,” said Ms. Ehrman-Shapiro.

Her work with the three novice dancers was a natural outgrowth of her role as founder of the Kiva Collective, whose 13 members do all their own choreography, and her work as a dance therapist. “We are not about one vision,” said Ms. Byrne, and this concept was applied to the development of “Courageous Journey.”

The three cancer survivors came forward to create the piece after Ms. Byrne approached Brave at Heart, a Waterbury area support group for women dealing with breast cancer. “We wanted to find survivors of breast cancer who were not dancers,” she explained. “We contacted the Harold Leever Cancer Center in Waterbury, where Anne Pringle runs a support group. We said we were looking for survivors and she sent e-mails to the 30 women there. These three women responded. I think three is a good number because the piece can be more intimate.”

Intimate it is, growing out of the individual experiences and feelings of the dancers. All were strangers to the others before they met in the beautiful contemplative garden at Wisdom House in Litchfield for their first session. There they walked the meditation labyrinth together and, under the guidance of Ms. Ehrman-Shapiro, shared the deep feelings they had about their common experience. Later they worked to turn those feelings into dance movement.

Ms. Bauer, who is on the board of Are You Dense, described the piece in an e-mail as an effort to “portray this awful experience without a happy-ever-after ending … moving through it in, hopefully, a beautiful, telling way to the strong, spit-you-in-the-eye [cancer] ending that is our reality. It is a beautiful, emotionally cathartic experience.”

The women laughed when asked if they were members of the Kiva Collective. “We are not dancers,” responded Mrs. Johnston.

“This is our maiden voyage in dancing and appearing onstage in tights,” added Ms. Bauer with a smile. But the women concede that what they can bring to the program is the intimate knowledge of what breast cancer is like and what it does to a person. “There are a lot of little details no one would think of who hadn’t gone through it,” said Mrs. Johnston.

“When you are going through it, you keep on your happy face, and people just don’t know what it is like,” explained Ms. Bauer.

And many people don’t want to know. Another lengthy piece created by Ms. Kunsch of Nutmeg Conservatory for the concert, “Watch with Me,” addresses the problem cancer victims face when the support of their friends dry up. “When you are first diagnosed, people come out of the woods to be nice to you,” said Mrs. Johnston. But later that support fades, often just as the cancer victim needs it the most. “When you really need them, they are not there,” said Ms. Byrne. She said the piece is based on the disciples who slept while Christ prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Four women from Brattleboro, Vt., will present their interpretation of “The Waiting Room,” and the Clark Dance Theatre of New Haven will present a healing piece. Continuing the positive energy of the program, Chloe Carlson of Dance Connect will do a piece on joy.

Ms. Ehrman-Shapiro praised Wisdom House for its generosity in making its facilities available for the rehearsals. “Wisdom House has just been wonderful,” she said, commenting that it has provided a sunny meeting room for rehearsals and access to its meditation labyrinth.

“Dancing in Pink!” will be staged Sept. 18 at 2 and 8 p.m. at the Nancy Marine Studio Theatre at the Warner Theatre, located at 68 Main St., Torrington. Tickets are $27. Group rates are available. For tickets, call 860-489-7180, or visit www.warnertheatre.org.

Interesting Facts About
How To Reduce Bruising!

Posted by Jan Doan on September 11th, 2010

There is a greater tendency to bruise easily as we age. These bruises tend to hang around longer too. This is caused because our bodies simply do not regenerate as quickly as they did when we were younger. In order to help reduce easy bruising, we must improve our overall physical health and condition. A regular cardiovascular exercise system and good muscle tone will help in the reduction of your tendency to bruise easily. There are lots of ways to exercise to help get your body in the shape it should be. A few of those that you might consider include pilates, yoga, dancing, and low impact aerobic exercise are just a few of the many choices.

The lack of a proper exercise program can actually contribute to your easy bruising. A regular, consistent exercise program can not only help reduce bruising, but it can also reduce your chances of serious injury. Any type of exercise that incorporates cardio exercises makes blood vessels stronger. Balancing exercises work those muscles that support our balance and help with coordination. Now get up and take action. Taking positive action will make a huge difference in the way you live.

One type of dance that you can find everywhere now is belly dancing. It has become a favorite exercise dance. Although it appears very sensual and slow it does involve a lot of conditioning, strength and concentration. There are aerobic styles of belly dancing for you to try. By working hard to perfect your belly dancing skills you will find and increase your cardiovascular abilities. Through this you will find you will have less bruising. So really consider giving belly dancing a try, because it could be loads of fun and help you reap the benefits of a stronger cardiovascular system.

If you have never considered jazzercise, it is definitely worth checking out, especially if you love jazz music. Dancing to the rhythm and power of jazz tunes helps people gain that physical health while enjoying themselves. Jazzercise promotes the improvement of strength, flexibility and most importantly the circulatory system. This aides in the prevention of damage or injury to your skin. Gaining grace and strength will be a huge asset in your overall health. If you are feeling jazzy, then dance your way to being healthy.

For overall conditioning, Pilates exercises the mind as well as the body. A Pilates program can dramatically change how your body performs, looks and feels. It is designed to build strength without bulk while teaching good posture, body awareness, flexibility and agility. Bruising will not happen as easily and the healing process will be faster. This form of exercise is for any age or physical condition. This may well be just the type of exercise program that will benefit you the most.

Yoga classes have long been used as a way for people to seek spiritual awareness. But there are others that use yoga as a way to gain the strength and flexibility needed to reach peak physical health. Yoga allows you to learn relaxation while strengthening and toning the body. Bruises will occur less on a healthy body.

Low impact aerobics can not only reduce bruising but also the chances of injury. By improving your core strength as well as your heart and circulatory system, your health will improve. These aerobic classes are widely available.

By making your heart stronger, the capillaries and other blood vessel walls get stronger making it harder for you to bruise. Therefore your body’s ability to reduce bruising can be achieved through whatever exercise program that best suits you. Once you have chosen your preferred exercise routine, you should also add the benefits of the all natural Bruises Be Banned daily supplement program which can be the final necessary step to reduce bruising easily and stop bruising completely.

Jan Doan, the “Doctor of Bruiseology” is renowned as the only writer to have written a complete reference book on bruising, teaching people why they bruise, and how they may avoid bruising. You can obtain for yourself Part I of the new Desktop Reference Book on bruising causes free and learn the best way to get beyond the nightmares of easy bruising and how to prevent bruising.

Withdrawal from the world is something we can, and perhaps should, do every day. It completes the movement of which entering fully into life is only one part. Just as a loaf of bread needs air in order to rise, everything we do needs an empty place in its interior. I especially enjoy such ordinary retreats from the active life as shaving, showering, reading, doing nothing, walking, listening to the radio, driving in a car. All of these activities can turn one's attention inward toward contemplation.

Mundane withdrawal from the busyness of an active life can create a spirituality-without-walls, a spiritual practice that is not explicitly connected to a church or a tradition. I have never forgotten Joseph Campbell's response when he was asked about his yoga practice: laps in a pool and a drink once a day.

Anything is material for retreat - cleaning out a closet, giving away some books, taking a walk around the block, clearing your desk, turning off the television set, saying no to an invitation to do anything.

At the sight of nothing, the soul rejoices.

- Thomas Moore, "Meditations: On the Monk Who Dwells in Daily Life"

Today I place an energy boost within the video and share with you a moment to be still, to be centered, and to be at peace. In the midst of the fullness of life let us cultivate a world of emptiness. Let us reconnect with internal balance as we move forward in harmony with all things, living a life filled with passion and purpose. I gratefully acknowledge the boost from you and honor your awesome spirit.

Thanks so much for all you do as friends and healers, and please enjoy the previous posts.  I'm on a roll with excerpts of Thomas Moore's book this week...

Please join me in welcoming another friend and great spirit from Australia, Janice, in southwest Victoria (#22 on the list).  To be honest, I don't quite recall exactly how we met, although our most recent communications was about the grand ol' days of the World Wide Reiki Organization run by Reiki master Martin Lee. We each came upon the surprising discovery that the website was down and had no knowledge of his recent activities or contact.  If anyone can share a few clues, please post a comment.

Until then, enjoy every moment and live the passionate life you intend it to be.
