Try a Picture Rail, Spare Your Art-Filled Walls from Nail Holes

The age-old way to hang things on soft walls

Boho room with art on picture rails.

The term "picture rail" refers to a thin piece of horizontal molding that usually sits about 12 to 20 inches below the ceiling in a room. Maybe you’ve heard of them and not known their purpose. Or maybe you’ve seen one in an old home and thought it was just a nice architectural detail. In reality, however, this piece has a specific function that, yes, has to do with hanging pictures. Interior designer Megan Pflug’s home already had a picture rail when she moved in, so she decided to use it to her advantage.

“Originally, [picture rails] were designed for use on plaster walls so that you did not have to damage your wall (or wall coverings) to hang artwork—and for that same reason they are still super-useful,” she explains. “I love to switch things around. With a few gallery rods, I can rearrange my art with no regret.”
