Most people come and go without leaving their footprints on the Earth. Most die and never really live, afraid oftaking chances, afraid of failing and afraid of succeedingand all the scrutiny that it would bring. Earl Woods, the father of golfer, Tiger Woods, passed away Wednesday from cancer. Ultimately the cigarettes that he couldn't quit took his life.
We all make mistakes in life. If we are judged only by our mistakes, then every last one of us are schmucks. Fortunately for most of us, most of our errors don't kill us. No. We can learn, get back up and move forward wiser than before.
What Earl did in his life will send positive ripples out across the world for generations, but not because he raised a great golfer. Earl Woods helped to raise a person who, because of his competitive spirit, creates opportunity for thousands of people. Tiger, because of his mother and father, not only earns millïons of dollars in prize money and endorsements, but he gives millions away and he gives of himself to children who weren't lucky enough to have parents like his.
Earl raised a spirited, disciplined and good person who gives of himself to things bigger than himself. Winning golf tournaments for Tiger is no different than you doing your best at your job. Both create opportunity. If you were to do everything you do as good as you can do it, you would be famous, at least in your circle of acquaintances. You would have more opportunities in every area of your life than you could possibly take on.
It's only when you don't do or say what you should have that the real problems arise and chances are taken away. If you did your absolute best at your job every day, you would rise up (maybe not where you are, but somewhere), be hailed and revered. Your earnings would rise, absolutely. Are they going up? Whether it's yes or no, it's your fault.
If you did your absolute best at teaching your children good morals and the value of an honest day's labor, they would make your chest swell with pride every single day ofyour life. Do they? If so, it's your fault. If not, it's your fault. If you did your absolute best in taking care of your health, you would be trim, hard and have energy enough to run many miles a day...Are you trim and energetic? Yes or no, it's your fault.....
I'll bet your best is really extraordinary. You're rarely too busy to give your best effort. You aren't usually too busy to be nice. You aren't too busy to perform your duties correctly. If you accept that over the long-term, the outcomes you get in your life are the results of your own decisions and actions, you can become accomplished and wise.
You can be a winner at everything you do.
And you can create other winners, too...Like Earl Woods did.
