Ho mai ka loea, ka ike, ka mana
I a'e ka honua la
Translation: Bring cleverness, knowledge, supernatural powers
So that earth may ascend

According to ancient Hawaiian wisdom, the Hawk is the 'messenger', teaching us to be observant, to pay attention to what we may overlook. Which could mean a talent we don't use, a blessing for which we haven't expressed gratitude, or a message from Spirit. Spelled 'Io , it symbolizes the divine and refers to the name of an endangered Hawaiian hawk whose appearance can signify a message from God. When spelled 'I'o , it means 'heart, the gist of the matter, essence, mystery, true or genuine'.

One of the most respected modern Hawaiian kahuna (priests) emphasized the importance of balanced living between the spirit and material worlds. He warned that the creation and radiation of divine energy must be balanced in order to avoid negative emotions and misguided actions. When people turn to spirit alone, they lose touch with the beauty of nature, or when they turn to the material alone, they lose touch with love. We also fall out of balance when we forget to feel grateful for all of life's lessons and mysteries.

The 'I'o chant is derived from a prayer that asks for the skill, wisdom, and power needed to get unstuck from the muck. The prayer appeals for assistance in overcoming distress or misfortune due to wrong actions. The prayer also speaks of the earth ascending her wisdom to enable us to participate in actions that radiate divine energy back to the Creator.]

'I'o has many different forms, so be sure to take inventory of all that is currently manifesting in your life. As you begin to explore the mystery of 'I'o, remember that some mysteries don't need to be solved, but only acknowledged and participated in. 'I'o appears to remind us that the divine is always with us. Even problems contain divine perfection. Everything is manifesting exactly as it should be, even that which you cannot presently comprehend. Therefore, express gratitude for all of life's mysteries.
