Disappointment can darken our emotional landscape like a gloomy day. Our spirits become downcast. A gray fog rolls in and the landmarks that we look to for serenity and security become obscured. Depression clings to everything. Nothing seems worthwhile. It is necessary to practice a determined and practical optimism in the face of disappointment.

We must act rather than react, taking small concrete steps to modify our mood. Sometimes we need the challenge of a new major project. I will sort my files, reorder my library, stretch and exercise vigorously. Sometimes it is as simple as buying fresh flowers or a pint of raspberries, or taking a refreshing bath. Sometimes it is placing a call to a lively yet sympathetic friend. Always there is a concrete way, however small, to act on our own behalf.

The world may disappoint us but we can choose not to disappoint ourselves.

Today, I act with resilient optimism. I treat myself exactly as I wish to be treated. I am self-loving and self-respectful. I am the kind of person I myself respect and admire.
